Rodeo Plaza Update PDF Print E-mail

In 1986, a portion of N. Commerce Street between Exchange Ave. and Stockyards Blvd was closed to create a pedestrian walkway for the Stockyards and the area was renamed Rodeo Plaza. Removable bollards along with other enhancements were added, however, the area still looked like a street and did not encourage pedestrian traffic.

The Project included:

  • Beautiful new Gateway at the south end of the Plaza near Exchange Avenue with Antique Pipe Bollards to restrict vehicular traffic, but permit pedestrian access
  • Refurbished, signature Gateway at the north end of the Plaza on Stockyards Boulevard with addition of gates and enhancements to the arch
  • An attractive, accessible Gazebo
  • An enlarged Ride-Out Arena, with a new cover, pipe fence and viewing arcade
  • Improved Landscaping
  • New Light Poles and the "Texas-sized" spurs near the South Gateway are a component of the public art by Artist, Steve Teeters

We appreciate your cooperation in restricting access to the Plaza.  Please share this information with your staff, guests and vendors.

Look for more updates soon regarding additional programming and maintenance in Rodeo Plaza!  For more information, call us @ 817-392-2502

Fort Worth exhibit shows a different side of Georgia O'Keeffe PDF Print E-mail

Article Excerpt By Angela K. Brown,
Associated Press Writer

FORT WORTH — The elegant Georgia O'Keeffe is known for her large-scale paintings of vibrant flowers and trees, but inspiration for her other works came during many rustic camping trips out West. That little-known side of O'Keeffe is the focus of a new exhibit at the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame. It features some never-before-displayed art, photographs, clothing and camping gear — including her tent, sleeping bag, lanterns and cooking utensils — from her time in New Mexico in the 1940s.

"She appreciated nature and felt she had to be close to nature to capture it," said museum curator Tricia Taylor Dixon. "We wanted to show her as a person, a woman and a nature lover, and not just the iconic, distant artist as she was known by most people."

The "Georgia O'Keeffe and the Faraway: Nature and Image" exhibit opens Friday and runs through Sept. 6 at the museum in Fort Worth.

Rahr Roof Collapses in Storm PDF Print E-mail

Storm damage is helping keep the beer cold after part of the roof at a Fort Worth brewery collapsed under heavy snow. The owner of Rahr & Sons Brewing Co. says the frigid weather should keep the beer sufficiently chilled until repairs are made.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported Saturday that the collapse tore coolant lines that kept 13 storage tanks at the right temperature in the warehouse. The chilly weather is linked to a storm that dumped more than a foot of snow in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Owner Fritz Rahr says he's working to get the lines fixed or secure enough refrigerated tanker trucks to move out some 22,000 gallons of craft ales and lagers. No beer was damaged. A tasting party scheduled for Saturday has been postponed.

Record Snowfall Hits Fort Worth PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 07 July 2007 09:54

Feb. 12 (Bloomberg) -- The Fort Worth-Dallas area set a 24- hour snowfall record in a storm that left more than 180,000 electric customers in the dark, canceled 1,500 flights across the U.S. South and dazzled residents.
As of 4 a.m. local time, Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport recorded 12.5 inches (32 centimeters) of snow, breaking the previous mark of 12.1 inches set in January 1964, according to a weather service bulletin. The snow pushed the seasonal tally to 15.7 inches making this the second snowiest since 1977- 1978, when 17.6 inches fell.
“This is big for North Texas,” said Eric Martello, a weather service senior forecaster in Fort Worth. “The system came in at the right time of day yesterday and ended three or four hours ago setting all kinds of records.”

Teen takes top prize at Fort Worth Stock Show despite tough year PDF Print E-mail

By GARY REAVES / WFAA-TV
FORT WORTH — Rikki Buckalew is the new grand champion of a contest she didn’t think she had a chance to win.

In 10 years of showing steers, Rikki has never come close to winning at the Fort Worth stock show. This year, one of her cows died and another came up lame, leaving only the big one she calls her baby.

She gave him a name he could live up to: War Admiral.

But she had a battle of her own to fight first — against a rare brain disease. A high school senior in Graham, about 85 miles northwest of Fort Worth, she was working to be in the top 10 percent of her class, hoping for a scholarship to Texas A&M University. But then, the headaches started.

"It was scary," recalled her mom, Leaann Buckalew. "It was extremely scary not knowing what was going on, why she was in so much pain."

After a week at Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth, Rikki said she was diagnosed with a rare disease.

"It’s where my brain thinks I have a tumor, so it makes a bunch of spinal fluid," she said.

Rikki missed so much school, she almost failed. She was accepted at TCU; she just couldn't afford it. And as for the Stock Show, her expectations were low. "Seventh place, maybe," she said.

So as Rikki led War Admiral into the show ring, she wasn't exactly confident.

"I was like, 'Oh, he's not picking mine. These other steers are better, I'm sure.'"

But she was wrong. To read the rest of this article, click here.
